Dogs spend a huge portion of their day sleeping — anywhere from 12 to 18 hours depending on age and breed. The right bed matters more than most owners realize.
Know your dog's sleep style
Dogs that curl up tightly tend to do best with a donut or nest-style bed that offers a sense of enclosure. Dogs that sprawl out flat are usually more comfortable on a flat orthopedic mat with plenty of surface area.
Consider age and joints
Senior dogs and larger breeds benefit significantly from memory foam or orthopedic support, which reduces pressure on joints and can noticeably improve mobility and comfort.
Washability is not optional
Look for a removable, machine-washable cover. Dog beds accumulate dander, dirt, and odor fast, and a bed you can't easily clean will end up unused within a few months.
Size it up, not down
A common mistake is buying a bed sized to your dog's current curled-up position. Always size for your dog fully stretched out, plus a few extra inches on each side.
A well-matched bed isn't just about comfort — better sleep supports better behavior, recovery, and overall health.
