At-Home Dog Grooming: A Beginner's Guide

By Heidi Loves Pets Team 178 min read

Regular grooming isn't just about keeping your dog looking good — it's a core part of their health routine. Here's how to build a simple at-home grooming habit.

Brushing frequency

Short-haired breeds do well with a weekly brush, while long-haired or double-coated breeds often need brushing every 2-3 days to prevent matting and reduce shedding around the house.

Bath time basics

Most dogs only need a bath every 4-6 weeks unless they get visibly dirty. Over-bathing can strip natural oils from their skin and coat, leading to dryness and irritation.

Nail trims

If you can hear your dog's nails clicking on hard floors, they're overdue for a trim. Long nails can affect gait and posture over time, so aim for a check every 3-4 weeks.

Ears and teeth

A quick weekly ear check for odor or redness, plus regular tooth brushing (yes, dogs need it too!), can prevent two of the most common — and most preventable — vet visits.

Start slow, keep sessions short and positive, and grooming can become something your dog genuinely looks forward to.
